'Tis the season of giving! Community Impact is one of DB&B's core values, and there is no better time than the holiday season to be reminded to help those in need. We are lucky to partner with United Way, an organization that brings hope and resources to our community. We were proud to support United Way as they ran their annual Care Package Project. The Care Package Project was a drive to help collect and then distribute various hygienic supplies for those in need in Central New York.

As you start the process of year-end tax planning, it gives us the opportunity to look at any updates or changes in credits, both Federal and in New York State that could affect our personal and business returns this upcoming filing season. Below is an overview of some credits that to pay attention to for the upcoming tax season.

Federal - Research and Development (R&D) Credit

As we near the end of another busy year, here is a second round of tax planning strategies that will facilitate this year’s tax filing. Remember to keep in close contact with your tax advisor to identify any significant financial or tax rule changes that may affect you this year. Here is a list of considerations to help you manage your tax bracket, potentially lower your tax liability, and feel prepared for the upcoming tax season.

Kiernan Briggs and Kelly Benjamin have both recently been promoted from Associates to Senior Associates in the Tax Department.

Kiernan received a Bachelor of Science degree in Risk Management and Insurance as well as a Master of Business Administration degree in Professional Accountancy from Utica College. Before joining the firm full-time, Kiernan interned in the tax department with the firm. He is working to complete the certification process to earn his designation as a Certified Public Accountant.

When considering ways to save on taxes, it is important to keep in close contact with your tax professional to identify any significant financial changes you have had this year, along with any new tax rules that may affect you.

We are in the thick of recruiting season and are so impressed with the student candidates thus far. Dermody, Burke & Brown, CPAS LLC’s Tax Intern program is designed to provide a dynamic, challenging, and valuable on-the-job work experience in a Public Accounting Firm. On August 24, President Biden announced a three part plan to tackle student debt as families continue to recover from the additional struggles associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes providing targeted debt relief, making the student loan system more manageable, and reducing the cost of college. The most pressing matter for borrowers was the debt relief strategies outlined by the President, specifically; how it works, who is eligible, and what steps need to be taken to maximize debt relief.

Many Americans are feeling the pinch from soaring inflation: skyrocketing grocery bills, gas bills that reached new heights, and supply chain issues are just a few of the many problems that impact us. It’s more important than ever to find ways to save and put a few greenbacks in our pockets. The recent signing of the Inflation Reduction Act contains a few green tax provisions that can help improve personal and corporate carbon footprints, as well as save a lot of money.
